Solar ATAP is Malaysia's current government solar scheme, managed by SEDA. It replaced NEM (Net Energy Metering), which closed to new applications at the end of June 2025. Solar owners export excess energy to TNB at RM0.2703/kWh (residential), credited against the Energy Charge rather than netted against consumption. Solar ATAP capacity limits: domestic 5 kWac single-phase / 15 kWac three-phase (larger systems need a TNB Connection Confirmation Check, RM1,000); non-domestic capped at 100% of the site's maximum demand (MD) in kWac, with a ceiling of 1,000 kWac.

Most residential solar installations (below 72kW) in Malaysia do not require separate local authority planning permission (e.g., MBPJ, MPAJ, DBKL). You need: (1) SEDA approval for the Solar ATAP scheme, (2) TNB approval for grid connection. For large commercial/industrial systems above 72kW, additional permits from Suruhanjaya Tenaga may apply.
