Rent-to-own solar (RTO) works like a car hire purchase — a solar company installs the system at no upfront cost and you pay a fixed monthly fee. Unlike leasing (PPA), at the end of the 5-7 year tenure the system is 100% yours. Think of it as paying for the system in installments while the panels work for you from day one.
Monthly payments range from RM180 to RM650 depending on system size and tenure length. A 3 kWp system starts from RM180/month on a 7-year plan, suitable for households with electricity bills of RM200-400. A 10 kWp system runs RM410-650/month. In most cases the monthly savings on your TNB bill equal or exceed the RTO payment.
Yes — full legal ownership transfers to you once the final payment is made. There are no hidden buyout fees or residual payments. The system, inverter, mounting structure, and all components become your property outright. You also inherit any remaining manufacturer warranty on the panels (typically 25 years from installation date).
The rent-to-own agreement can be transferred to the new property owner with our approval. The buyer takes over the remaining monthly payments and eventually receives ownership at tenure end. Alternatively, you can settle the outstanding balance early (usually at a discounted rate) and include the fully-owned system in the property sale price — which often increases the property's value.
It depends on your situation. A bank green loan typically offers lower total cost if you qualify for good rates (3.88%-5% p.a.), but requires a credit check and formal loan application. Rent-to-own is easier to qualify for, includes maintenance, and has no hidden interest — the monthly payment is fixed from day one. For those who don't want a bank loan on their credit file or prefer an all-inclusive package, RTO is often the better choice.
During the entire rental tenure, all maintenance is covered at no extra cost — panel cleaning, inverter servicing, wiring inspections, and any component replacements due to normal wear or manufacturing defects. You only pay for damage caused by misuse or acts of God not covered by insurance. This is a key advantage over bank loans or cash purchases where maintenance is your own responsibility.
Yes. Rent-to-own is well-suited for SMEs, retail outlets, and light industrial premises that want to reduce operating costs without capital expenditure. Commercial systems from 10 kWp upwards are available on RTO terms. Business applicants go through a similar assessment process — company registration, utility bills, and a site visit. The monthly fee is also tax-deductible as an operating expense during the rental period.
Solar ATAP is a bill credit programme — it allows you to export excess solar energy to TNB and offset your electricity bill, but it does not reduce the upfront system cost. If you are considering rent-to-own, our assessors will help you right-size the system to your actual consumption to maximise your monthly savings and keep your RTO repayment comfortable.
