Build your solar plan — no payment until you approve
Configure solarSingle phase or three phase? It decides how big your solar system can legally be.
Not your roof. Not your budget. Not even your bill. Your electricity supply sets a hard legal ceiling on the system you are allowed to install — and most Malaysian homes hit it sooner than they expect.
The short answer
5 kWac
Roughly 6.82 kWp of panels. Most terrace and link houses.
15 kWac
Up to our largest residential system. Bungalows and larger homes.
Go above your cap and TNB requires a Connection Confirmation Check — RM1,000 plus waiting time.
How to tell which one you have
You do not need an electrician for this. Open your meter box and look at the main breaker.
- One live and one neutral cable entering the main breaker
- Breaker stamped 1P or SP
- Typical of terrace, link and most semi-detached homes
- Three lives plus a neutral — four thick cables
- Breaker stamped 3P or TP
- Common in bungalows, or homes with a lift, pool pump or many aircond units
Not sure? Photograph the meter box and send it to us on WhatsApp. It takes about ten seconds to read, and getting it wrong changes the whole quote.
The cap is on the inverter, not the panels
This trips people up constantly. Two different numbers describe a solar system:
kWp — the panels
What the array could produce under laboratory conditions. This is the number most quotes lead with.
kWac — the inverter
What can actually flow into your wiring. This is the number the regulation limits, because this is what your supply has to carry.
That is why a 6.82 kWp array is compliant on a 5 kWac inverter. Panels almost never all hit their rated output at the same instant, so a modest amount of oversizing on the panel side is normal, expected and permitted.

What if you want more than the cap allows?
TNB Connection Confirmation Check — RM1,000
Exceeding 5 kWac on domestic single phase, or 15 kWac on three phase, requires TNB to confirm your connection can carry it. That is a RM1,000 fee and additional waiting time on your application.
Before you pay it, ask whether you need the extra capacity at all
Under Solar ATAP the power you use as it is generated is worth about RM0.4443/kWh to you. Power you export is credited at roughly RM0.2703/kWh — and any credit you do not use is forfeited at the end of each billing period. There is no carry-forward, unlike the old NEM scheme.
So a bigger system on a house that is empty during the day does not bank value for later. It exports more at the lower rate and loses whatever is left over. On a bill under roughly RM500 a month, 6.82 kWp already generates more than most households can consume while the sun is up.
The honest question is not how big a system can I fit but how much of it will I actually use.
Common questions
How do I know if my house is single phase or three phase?+
Open your meter box and count the thick incoming cables at the main breaker. Single phase has one live and one neutral. Three phase has three lives plus a neutral. The main breaker itself is usually stamped 1P or SP for single phase, and 3P or TP for three phase. Most Malaysian terrace and link houses are single phase. Bungalows, larger semi-detached homes and anything with a lift, a pool pump or several air-conditioners are more often three phase. If you are unsure, photograph the meter box and send it to us — it takes about ten seconds to read.
What is the maximum solar system size on single phase in Malaysia?+
Under Solar ATAP section 8.1 a domestic single phase supply is capped at a 5 kWac inverter. In practical terms that is around 6.82 kWp of panels. Three phase domestic is capped at 15 kWac. The limit is on the inverter rating in kWac, not on the panel capacity in kWp, which is why a 6.82 kWp system fits inside a 5 kWac cap.
Can I install a bigger system than the cap on single phase?+
Yes, but not automatically. Going above 5 kWac on a domestic single phase supply requires a Connection Confirmation Check from TNB, which costs RM1,000 and adds waiting time to your application. For most homes it is cheaper and faster to size the system to 6.82 kWp, or to upgrade the supply to three phase if the bill genuinely justifies it.
Why is the limit in kWac and not kWp?+
kWp measures the panels; kWac measures what the inverter can push into your wiring. The grid connection cares about the second number, because that is what actually flows through your supply. A 6.82 kWp array paired with a 5 kWac inverter is compliant even though the panel figure is higher, because the panels rarely produce their full rated output at the same moment.
Should I upgrade from single phase to three phase for solar?+
Only if your electricity use justifies it independently. A three phase upgrade is a TNB application with its own cost and lead time, and on a bill under roughly RM500 a month a 6.82 kWp single phase system will already generate more than most households can self-consume. Under Solar ATAP any surplus you export is credited at a lower rate than the power you avoid buying, and unused credit is forfeited at the end of each billing period — so a larger system on a modest bill can cost more without saving more.
Does the phase affect how much I save?+
Indirectly. The phase caps the system size, and the system size caps the generation. But what decides your actual saving is how much of that generation you use during the day rather than export. A three phase house that is empty from 8am to 6pm can easily save less per ringgit spent than a single phase house where someone is home.
