01

What Is a Solar Inverter?

Your solar panels produce DC (Direct Current) electricity. Your home runs on AC (Alternating Current). The inverter is the bridge — it converts DC to AC so your appliances can use the solar energy. Without it, your panels are useless.

But not all inverters work the same way. The two main architectures — string inverters and micro inverters — have fundamentally different approaches to this conversion. Each has real advantages depending on your roof, budget, and goals.

Why This Decision Matters

The inverter is the most failure-prone component in a solar system and accounts for 20-30% of your total cost. Panels last 25-30 years with minimal degradation. Your inverter choice determines your system’s real-world performance, maintenance burden, and total cost of ownership for the next decade.

02

How Each Type Works

Two fundamentally different architectures. Tap each diagram to understand the flow.

String Inverter System

All panels wired in series to one inverter

DC Wiring (Series)
INVERTER
To Meter & Grid
METER
TNB
One unit, easy maintenance
Lower cost, proven technology
One panel affects all (series)
High DC voltage on roof

Micro Inverter System

Each panel has its own inverter

AC Wiring (Parallel)
To Meter & Grid
METER
TNB
Panel independence, no chain effect
25-year warranty, modular expansion
Higher upfront cost
More complex roof installation

💡 The “Christmas Light Effect”

In a string inverter system, panels are wired in series — like old Christmas lights. If one panel is shaded, dirty, or damaged, it becomes a bottleneck for the entire string. A single panel producing 30% less can drag your entire system down by 15-20%.

The fix: Modern string inverters (Huawei, SolarEdge) offer DC power optimizers — small devices on each panel that mitigate this effect. They cost RM 100-200 per panel extra but give you 80% of the micro inverter benefit at 50% of the cost.

Head-to-Head Comparison

12 critical factors compared. Click any row for more detail. Filter by winner to see strengths at a glance.

String inverters are 20-40% cheaper upfront
String inverters have a slight efficiency edge in ideal conditions
Each micro inverter operates independently; one shaded panel doesn't affect others
See exact output per panel — diagnose issues instantly
Micro inverters are truly modular — expand anytime
Enphase offers 25-year warranty — outlasts most string inverters
Redundancy is a major micro inverter advantage
String inverters need less labor and fewer connections
Both handle Malaysian heat well with proper installation
String inverter replacement is a 30-minute job vs full roof access
Micro inverters are inherently safer — no high-voltage DC on the roof
The right choice depends on your specific roof and priorities

Shading & Performance in Malaysia

Malaysia’s tropical environment presents unique challenges: tall palm trees, rain trees, neighboring buildings, and afternoon thunderstorm clouds. Shading is the #1 performance killer for solar systems.

No Shading

Clear, unobstructed roof with good orientation. String inverter is the clear winner — 20-30% cheaper with marginally better efficiency (96-98.5% vs 95-97%).

→ Choose String

Partial Shading

1-3 panels affected for part of the day (trees, chimney, water tank). String + DC optimizers is the cost-effective play. Full micro if budget allows.

→ String + Optimizers OR Micro

Heavy Shading

Multiple panels shaded for hours — tall trees, adjacent building, complex multi-roof layout. Micro inverters are essential. 10-25% more yield vs string in heavy shade.

→ Choose Micro

Real Malaysia Data: From our monitoring of 200+ Klang Valley installations, string inverter systems on partially shaded roofs produce 8-15% less annual kWh than equivalent micro inverter systems. On fully unshaded roofs, string inverters produce 1-2% more due to higher conversion efficiency.

Which Should You Choose?

Your situation determines the right answer. Find your scenario below.

Simple Roof, Tight Budget

String Inverter

Unshaded single-orientation roof with budget under RM 30K for 8kW system. Sungrow or Huawei string inverter saves you RM 5,000-8,000 vs micro. ROI payback 4-5 years.

Shaded Roof / Multiple Orientations

Micro Inverter

Trees, neighboring buildings, or panels facing different directions. Micro inverters recover 10-25% more energy in shade, justifying the premium over 25 years.

Future Expansion Plans

Micro Inverter

Starting with 4kW now and adding more later? Micro inverters let you add one panel at a time. String inverters lock you into the inverter's max capacity.

Commercial / Industrial

String Inverter

Large flat roofs with minimal shading. Commercial systems (30-100kW+) are almost always string — the cost savings at scale are massive and maintenance is centralized.

Maximum Safety Priority

Micro Inverter

No high-voltage DC on your roof. Each panel outputs safe low-voltage AC. Critical for homes with thatched elements, close tree canopy, or fire safety concerns.

Best ROI / Payback Period

Either Works

On unshaded roofs, string inverters have 15-25% better ROI due to lower cost. On shaded roofs, micro inverters produce enough extra energy to match or beat string ROI.

The Bottom Line

70% of our Malaysian residential installations use string inverters. For most homes with a simple, unshaded roof and a focus on value, a quality string inverter (Sungrow, Huawei) is the smartest choice.

The other 30% benefit significantly from micro inverters. If you have shading, complex roof geometry, or want maximum monitoring and future flexibility, micro inverters (Hoymiles, Enphase) are worth every ringgit.

08

Frequently Asked Questions

For most Malaysian homes with minimal shading, string inverters (Sungrow, Huawei) offer the best value with 20-30% lower cost. Choose micro inverters if your roof has shading from trees/buildings, multiple orientations, or you want panel-level monitoring and maximum future expandability.
A quality string inverter for a typical 8-12kW residential system costs RM 3,000-6,000 in Malaysia (2026 pricing). Popular brands include Sungrow (RM 2,800-5,000), Huawei (RM 3,200-5,500), and GoodWe (RM 2,500-4,500).
Both types handle Malaysian heat well. String inverters are typically installed in shaded areas (garage, utility room) where temperature is controlled. Micro inverters sit under panels and are exposed to more heat but are designed for tropical operation up to 65°C. Neither has a decisive advantage in Malaysian climate.
With a traditional string inverter, one underperforming panel reduces the entire string's output (the "Christmas light effect"). Modern solutions like Huawei's DC optimizers or Tigo add-ons can mitigate this. With micro inverters, each panel is independent — one failure only affects that single panel.
Generally, no. Each system uses one type. However, you can use a hybrid approach: string inverter with DC optimizers (like Huawei Smart PV or SolarEdge) gives you most of the benefits of micro inverters at a lower cost than full micro inverter setups.
For unshaded roofs, string inverters deliver 15-25% better ROI due to lower upfront cost with similar energy production. For partially shaded roofs, micro inverters can recover the higher cost through 10-25% better energy yield, making ROI comparable or even better depending on shading severity.
