What if your car charged from your own roof? A solar panel system paired with an EV charger can cut what you buy from TNB and what you spend on charging. Here is the guide to pairing solar with an EV charger, with the numbers on the RP4 tariff.
The Math: Solar + EV vs Grid Charging
Take a home with a RM500 bill (about 998 kWh a month) that adds an EV using about 250 kWh a month (roughly 40-60 km a day), for 1,248 kWh a month in total. Estimate on the RP4 domestic tariff (from 1 Jul 2025), before AFA, the 1.6% RE Fund and service tax; 3.5 sun-hours a day; about 40% of solar used at home and the rest exported and credited at the 27.03 sen Energy Charge (capped at what you import) for 10 years under Solar ATAP; no tariff increases. Your bill and roof will change the figures. EV charging in the daytime would raise the share of solar used at home; we keep the default.

The EV itself adds about RM127 a month to the before-AFA bill in the table (about RM463 at 998 kWh, about RM590 at 1,248 kWh). The 250 kWh at the RM0.4443 rate is about RM111; the rest is the Energy Efficiency Incentive falling away, plus the service tax and 1.6% RE Fund on the extra usage. Over 25 years the savings are about RM85,600 (9.92 kWp) to about RM100,200 (11.16 kWp), counting export credit for the first 10 years only. What a Solar + EV Setup Includes
Our solar packages and EV chargers are priced separately, so you pick each to suit your home:
- Solar system: from the Trexon catalogue, for example 9.92 kWp at RM 23,999 or 11.16 kWp at RM 24,999 (Solis; Huawei adds RM 3,000, Sungrow adds RM 5,000). Solar-only Solis packages use a grid-tied string inverter; compatible storage includes the required hybrid inverter scope.
- EV charger: from our EV charger price comparison (Trexon installs the Schneider Charge Pro at RM6,499 installed; other brands are market estimates).
- Included in the solar package price: installation, the Solar ATAP application, TNB paperwork and SEDA registration.
How Solar + EV Charging Works
- Daytime: Solar panels generate electricity, powering your home, and the EV charges from it if it is plugged in
- Evening and night: The grid supplies your home and the EV (a battery, if you add one, can cover part of this)
- Surplus: Excess solar is exported and earns a bill credit under Solar ATAP at the Energy Charge (RM0.2703/kWh); unused credit is forfeited at the end of each billing period
Paying for It
Every route starts with the RM2,000 booking fee. Options:
- 0% credit card instalments: Affin, AmBank, HSBC, RHB and Standard Chartered offer 3/6/12/24 months; Alliance, OCBC and UOB offer 6/12/24 months. For example RM 24,999 over 24 months is about RM 1,042 a month, interest RM 0 (Maybank 0% EPP is not available through Trexon).
- Bank solar financing: Maybank Solar PV Financing offers up to RM100,000 for up to 10 years at a floating rate (Maybank's own illustration: SBR + 2.70%). Check the current rate and terms on the bank's own page.
- OKAPI rent-to-own: 7 or 10 years; insurance and warranty included, maintenance cover as set out in your OKAPI agreement; approval requires positive cash flow; batteries are not included.

Tax Incentives That Help
- EV charger tax relief: RM2,500 individual tax relief on EV charging equipment
- Solar ATAP: Export excess solar energy to TNB and earn bill credits under a contract of up to 10 years
- SuRIA Home rebate: RM600 per kWac, up to RM3,000, for Malaysian citizens with a residential TNB account in Peninsular Malaysia; TNB notifies eligible customers and pays the TNB account holder
- GITA (for businesses): 60% tax allowance for solar (Tier 2) and 100% for EV charging systems (Tier 1), set off against up to 70% of statutory income, administered by MGTC; commissioned and submitted by 31 December 2026, subject to MGTC verification. Learn about GITA
Frequently Asked Questions
How much roof space do I need for solar + EV charging?
A 9.92 kWp system (16 panels) needs approximately 45 sqm of roof space. Most semi-D and bungalow homes have sufficient roof area; terrace homes may fit a smaller system. Check your roof with our calculator.
What if it's cloudy or rainy?
Solar panels still generate some power on cloudy days. We plan with about 3.5 peak sun-hours a day. When solar output is low or at night, your charger draws from the grid.
Can I charge two EVs with one solar system?
Possibly: a 9.92 kWp system generates about 1,042 kWh a month, so two EVs at about 250 kWh each plus your home's own use may exceed it. Size the system to your total use. Install a second charger at additional cost.
