Solar Panel Financing Malaysia 2026: 5 Ways to Go Solar with Zero Down Payment

From bank green loans starting at 3.5% p.a. (Maybank, CIMB, RHB, Public Bank, BSN) to PPA with zero capex and BNPL plans — discover every financing route for solar panels in Malaysia and calculate your exact monthly payment.

By Chandra Rau, MIT • SEDA-registered InstallerUpdated March 202612 min read

Key Takeaways

  • Bank green loans start from 3.5% p.a. — Maybank, CIMB, Public Bank, RHB, and BSN all offer dedicated solar products with RM0 upfront.
  • Cash purchase delivers the highest ROI (5–7 year payback) if you have idle capital — no interest, no monthly commitment.
  • PPA and solar leasing = truly RM0 upfront. Ideal for businesses that want immediate savings without capital outlay.
  • Solar ATAP bill credits (~RM0.218/kWh exported) reduce your ongoing TNB bill — stacks with all financing options. Note: SolaRIS RM4,000 ended April 2025.
  • Companies can combine GITA (60% ITA) with bank financing — recovering up to 34% of system cost through tax alone.
  • Solar loans do NOT require collateral — banks use the TNB bill and quotation as primary underwriting documents.

PPA vs Solar Lease vs Cash Purchase

Three very different approaches — each with distinct risk, ownership, and savings profiles. Choose based on your priority: lowest upfront, highest savings, or simplest arrangement.

Trexon offers all three models. For factories and commercial properties consuming over RM8,000/month in electricity, PPA generates the fastest impact. For SMEs and homes, bank green loans give the best long-term ownership economics.

Which Options Truly Require RM0 Upfront?

Not all 'zero down' claims are equal. Here is an honest breakdown of what you actually pay before installation begins.

PPA
Truly RM0
Actual Upfront
RM0
Truly zero — provider installs and owns panels. You pay only for electricity generated.
Solar Lease / Rental
Truly RM0
Actual Upfront
RM0
RM0 upfront — first month rental may be collected on installation day.
Bank Green Loan
Low Upfront
Actual Upfront
RM0 down (legal + processing fees: ~RM500–800)
Banks advertise RM0 down — but expect processing and stamp duty fees of RM500–800.
BNPL (0% installment)
Low Upfront
Actual Upfront
RM0 if via credit card / BNPL platform
0% for promotional period (3–12 months). High interest applies after. Only suitable for smaller systems or bridge financing.
Cash Purchase
Full Upfront
Actual Upfront
Full system cost upfront
Best ROI and shortest payback (5–7 years) — but requires full capital available.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Green solar loans are separate personal/home-improvement products. Your existing mortgage appears in CCRIS but does not disqualify you — the bank checks your overall DSR. Most applicants with mortgages still qualify as long as DSR stays below 70%.
Most banks have a minimum loan amount of RM5,000–RM10,000, corresponding to approximately a 2kW–4kW system. A typical 5kW residential system costs RM18,000–RM25,000 and easily qualifies. There is no maximum system size restriction — the constraint is your DSR and income.
Yes. Any bank loan — including solar — appears in CCRIS and is factored into your Debt Service Ratio (DSR). A RM450/month solar repayment reduces your available DSR, which can lower the housing loan quantum you qualify for. If you plan to buy property within 2 years, consider cash purchase instead.
PPA is primarily offered to commercial and industrial clients (factories, offices, hotels) where electricity consumption is high enough to make the business model viable. Very few providers offer residential PPA in Malaysia. For homes, bank green loans are the most practical zero/low-upfront route.
Yes. You can put down a cash portion (e.g., RM10,000 on a RM25,000 system) and take a smaller bank loan for the balance. This reduces total interest paid, shortens tenure, and keeps your DSR healthier. Most banks support partial financing.
This is a genuine risk with PPA arrangements — the panels are owned by the PPA company, not you. In insolvency, the panels could be repossessed. Always check the provider's financial standing, equipment insurance clause, early termination fee structure, and whether there is a buy-out option. Trexon structures PPA contracts with an optional RM1 purchase clause at end of term.
If your house has a mortgage, check your loan agreement — some require notification for structural changes. For insurance, inform your home insurer to include the solar system under your fire/homeowners policy. Most insurers extend coverage at minimal or no additional premium. Failure to notify could void claims related to the solar system.
